In terms of what we’re tracking, small pillow bags are morphing into tote bags and large clutches and getting bigger and better. A treasure of glittery handbags with beading, braiding, and brocade is then gaining center stage in the evening bag industry. There are also clean-lined hobo bags and subdued shoulder bags coming, so don’t panic, minimalists.

1. Minimal Shoulder Bags
Sleek shoulder bags are the first item on our list of handbag trends for fall 2022. These carryalls are what handbag collectors’ extensive collections of crossbody bags and bucket bags lack. They are low-profile and utilitarian, with minimal frills aside from each brand’s signifier (Céline’s Triomphe; Valentino’s VLogo). Consider it each designer’s attempt to outdo the Fendi baguette.
2. Puffer Bags
Speaking of designers referencing one another, it has been difficult to avoid doing so since the notorious Bottega Veneta pouch made its debut in 2019. Designers are enlarging the cozy carryall to its greatest extent for Fall 2022, adopting the more-is-more philosophy. Off-White, Versace, and KHAITE all released imposing totes and bags, while Bottega went with a powerful pillow-shaped clutch.
3. Embellished Clutch
Designer evening bags are returning with parties. For Fall 2022, glittery crescents from Off-White, beaded buckets from Givenchy, and brocade purses from Fendi are all on the runway. For any black-tie event, wear yours with some frosty jewelry and a silk slip dress.
4. Large Chain Straps
Early in the 1990s, chunky chains made their way from the Miami fashion scene to the runways, and they’ve just undergone a revival. Brands like Versace and Chanel have revived the theme and added hefty gold chains to ready-to-wear items, handbags, and stiletto sandals. The best part is that backpacks with linked straps make transitioning from day to night much easier. The Saint Laurent wallet-on-chain has been added to the shopping basket.
5. Furry bags
A fluffy purse can add a bit of warmth to your fall attire. Plush textures seem just suitable for the temperature change, whether they are shearling-wrapped or faux fur-trimmed. For a tote that will work well with winter whites, choose Chloé’s Edith in shearling, or go for the teddy bear of bags—Saint Laurent’s Fermoir hobo.
6. Big Hobo
Last but not least, the most carefree handbag style for Fall 2022: the big hobo. The hobo’s balloon-like structure will be your greatest friend all fall because it was made to be loaded with all of your possessions and taken on the road. Choose silhouettes in seasonal materials, like the suede bag from KHAITE, or make it timeless with the leather version from Loewe.
